Merchant shophouses in South Bridge Road, Singapore
Many of the Chinese who migrated to Singapore from southern China set up their businesses in this district. Some became successful and owned shophouses in this area. During its heydays in the 60s and 70s, the merchants used to celebrate Chinese New Year with ear-deafening displays of strings of exploding firecrackers hung three or four storeys high from the shophouses. Traffic used to be stalled when the firecrackers are let off.
